Hey yall! Happy Autumn !
Well, yall may as well grab a chair and a cup of tea because this is going to take a minute. But there will be cuteness overload I promise and some giveaways to boot!

Yall, I was so excited last month when I received a copy of Mary Jane Butters latest book "Milk Cow Kitchen to review and giveaway to one of my readers!
![]() |
"Milk Cow Kitchen" by Mary Jane Butters |
Mary Jane wants us to have a backyard milk cow and she shows us how in her 5th book "Milk Cow Kitchen!

Then she teaches us how to make Ice Cream, cookies and Ginger Snaps! And thats just the first 200 pages of the book! The next 200 pages are dedicated to how to buy a good quality cow, why it is so important to keep good breeding records, how to care for your cow, how to milk the different size cows, yes cows come in different sizes. Full size, mid size, mini and micro! lol!
The differences in feed, how to get rid of pests, how to build shelters, vet care, dehorning, ear tagging, and companionship. Now we get into the business side of this adventure! Do you want to sell your extra milk? The legalities of selling raw milk. Zoning laws. Home decor and if that ain't enough, she rounds it all off with how to braid your hair like a milk maid!

Yall I have to tell you, this book is the first book that I have ever seen that actually tells you step by step how to "Have a Cow"! Whether it is in your backyard or on the farm. Now, we have around 80 cows at the moment. But I have shied away from keeping a milk cow because it is just my hubby and I at home. That was before I found out about Mini -jerseys! They give 1 -2 qts of milk a day! I think I could handle that amount of milk! And a mini! Sweeeet! So, I guess I know what is going on my Christmas wish list! My very own copy of Milk Cow Kitchen" and a Mini Jersey!
Now, if being an author and organic farmer isn't enough to keep MaryJane busy, she is also a fabric designer. Her past collections of Glamping and Bee My Honey were so adorable! She has a new line to go along with her book Milk Cow Kitchen and the Fat Quarter Shop was kind enough to send me a little to play with and some to giveaway!
I fell in love with the cutesy cows on that butter yellow background. I knew right away that I wanted to make a table runner for my big table and to use on my sideboard.
I used a charm pack and my tumbler template. Those tumblers remind me of an old fashioned milk jug!
I bordered it with Moda Essential Dots in Mocha ( think Chocolate milk!) and Crazy Girls in Butter!
I took it outside to see what my babies thought about it.
![]() |
I think Clover approves! |
![]() |
I added a little grass to the lower forty for those pretty girls on the back! |
I stitched in the ditch around the borders and did a simple meandering in the center. I love these cows!
I made a couple of tumbling coasters with the extra charms, insul-brite and flannel.
Yall, this project has been so fun. My mother in law used to have a milk cow. She had 8 children at home. I can definitely see the benefits of having a source of good nutritional milk right outside your back door. We have several full size Jerseys but I don't milk them. We would never use that much milk. But I would love a mini Jersey!
Now I promised some giveaways. So let's see what we have:
Next we have a charm pack of Mary Janes newest fabric line Milk Cow Kitchen. Thank you Fat Quarter Shop for offering a charm pack to one of my readers so they can make their very own project!
And finally we have a 10 spool set of Mark Lapinskis "I Can Fly" Aurifil 50 wt thread collection! Thank you Aurifil for offering this collection for one of my readers!

ReplyDeleteThat looks like a fantastic book!! I've been wanting a milk cow, but my dh and I go back and forth between a cow and goats, and still haven't gotten either. lol. You do know that you can 'share' with the calves, right? If you want to, you can only milk one of your cows like..once a day or every few days, and let the calves have the rest :) That way you get fresh milk, but not an over abundance.
ReplyDeleteI get the Jolly Jabber.
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm a follower, thanks for the great giveaways!
ReplyDeleteFirst of all, I love your little runner....really cute! I enjoy hand sewing....not hand quilting, but cross stitch and embroidery. Love the thread and the charm pack...and of course, the book looks great too....thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI follow Jolly Jabber already. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm one of your followers too! Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI'm an Aurifill/Auribuzz girl all the way ! Best thread ever made,.
ReplyDeleteOh my dear friend Jan -- Do you know you make me laugh and cry at the same time? Gosh I love ya girl. This post is the most amazing of all posts. From the book review, to the beautiful image of Clover, to your precious quilt and your amazing and witty content -- I just have to reach out and hug you! You made my day... thank you! I hand stitch my bindings too -- and needle turn applique and some hand quilting (although not much). I have yet to make a Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses block ;) Have a precious day my friend -- you made mine!
ReplyDeleteJan, thank you so much for the cuteness...your blog is always a great blog, today primo cute!
ReplyDeleteI do hand embroider some feed sack towels every now and then using that wooden hoop passed down from my mother.
I"d love the Milk Cow Kitchen book for the fashion chapter:
I follow FQS on all of those! love them
ReplyDeleteI love that print but I think I love the thread more, and I am overflowing in books. I do very little hand stitching and I don't know why. I really like it!
ReplyDeleteStopped by Fat Quarter Shop's You Tube page many times and today too.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the chance:)
A calf in a cowl, too sweet! What a wonderful giveaway. I've got 3 boys that go through milk like a hot knife through butter, I wish I could have a cow and a few chickens would be a definite bonus!
ReplyDeleteI love to cross stitch and am in the midst of a swap hop. I'd really like the thread, since you can never have too much thread ;)

ReplyDeleteYou did it again. Thos sweet little cows are adorable. Love the table rummer. Great way to use a charm pack. Sounds like you are talking about a t-shirt, when you talked about the Mini Jersey :)
ReplyDeleteIf I could win, it would probably be charm pack or thread. I don't think the association where we live would appreciate a cow in my back yard. It would bring memories back to my husband, but I don't think that would count! Have a super great day, and hope you are feeling better.
Lately the only hand stitching I do is binding my quilts. I have embroidered it the past. I would love to win the Aurifil thread so I can give it a try, or the charm pack.

ReplyDeleteJan, I am hand stitching (not EPP) 1" finished hexagons into a queen Grandmother's Flower quilt. My first choice is the book, the book, the book. My grandmother always plaited her waist length fine white hair like looked like that as the finished product. I'd love to display the book beside my bottles (in the carrier) from the dairy farm where I was raised. Thanks for the trip down memory lane and the great giveaways. Oh, yeah, I'd still take my milk raw any day. Oh, I can practically taste it.

The book looks like one you would revisit over and over. If I don't win the charm pack, I'll have to order some- love the cows too & the milk bottle top one. Thanks for sharing those photos.

ReplyDeleteMary Jane Butters is amazing! I would love to get her book. I also live on a farm, but I can't get half the stuff done that she does… and she also designs fabric!!
ReplyDeleteFor so long, I hand pieced and quilted baby quilts - and have just recently begun doing it by machine, so I'm not doing much hand stitching these days… maybe as the days get shorter and there's more time inside!
I mostly machine stitch but just did a smock a long and found a new love. I would be thrilled to have a copy of Milk Cow Kitchen as I also love to cook.
ReplyDeleteWhoops! I wrote my comment on your post from the 21st. It sort of applies to that one too. Anyway, I'll try again. Yes, I do hand stitching on EPP hexagons as well as some hand quilting, embroidery and cross stitch. The prize I would prefer to win is the thread but they are all great.
