It's finished!! Now I need a name!

Quilt Stats

Name: ???????
Fabric: Duck Dynasty Panel,DD fabric and scraps
Thread: Aurifil 4173
Batting: Warm and Natural
Size 83"x 85"

Woohoo! I am so glad I was able to finish this quilt for the hubby before Christmas. Just in the Nick of time! I personally think that is where Old St Nick gets his name! And this was no small task since I only started it on December 21st! And since I totally made up the design as I went along. And it turned out wayyyy bigger than I had planned!

The fussy cut tumblers were really fun. I especially like the "Late and Dirty" one .It describes my hubby to a tee since he is usually coming from the Barn or hay fields!

I don't know if those Duck boys noticed, but there are some pretty colorful geese flying overhead! I don't use Cheddar fabrics enough. I really like the color it adds!

A very sweet friend, Chris, (actually she is an Angel), quilted it for me. I chose a Maple Leaf pantograph. I really love how it turned out!

I am not crazy in love with the backing but it was what I had on hand that wasn't pink or floral . It is flannel, which I love. So it will be warm and toasty in the truck!

I used Aurifil 4173, which was a perfect match . Overall I guess the quilt makes me Happy, Happy Happy! (especially that I finished in time for Christmas)

Now I need to choose a name. I didn't have time to make the label before I took it to Chris for quilting so I will just hand stitch the label to the back.  I was thinking maybe " Low Tech Livin' " or "Low Tech Life in a High Tech World". What do you think? Any Duck Dynasty fans out there? Any name suggestions?

Merry Christmas dear friends! I am so grateful to have ya'll in my life. One of my New Year resolutions is to spend more time blogging! I hope each and everyone of you have a wonderful Holiday season filled with love, good health, friendship and joy!

Merry Christmas ya'll!

Birds of a Feather......A Challenge!

Yeah - this is a real challenge. I mean, I love panels ...sometimes... and The Duck Boys as my hubby fondly refers to them are presenting a real challenge to me to make this pretty. But since this is for the hubster to use in his truck, maybe it doesn't have to be PRETTY.
Keeping things Low Tech,  I decided no Duck Boys quilt would be complete without some Flying Geese (akaDucks) :

Then I tumbled around a few more ideas and added in some fussy cutting:

It was all so exhausting:

and I am still at it, with a friend (angel!) on standby to get it quilted at the last minute.Quilting sometimes is just not all it's Quacked up to be. I like to live Low Tech in this High Tech World as Mr Phil Robertson would say!

So,  I think it was very appropriate to walk outside and see this:

Now if I can just get my ducks in a row like these geese are VERY loudly trying to do, then maybe I can have this thing wrapped up by Christmas!
Happy Winter Solstice everyone! Please wish me luck! I'm gonna need it on this one!

Sew Simple Saturday Linky Party December 2015!

Hi everyone! Thank you for joining us for another Sew Simple Saturday. I have a fun and easy project this week! Braided Edge Fleece Blankets! Recently our local animal shelter asked the community for blankets to help with the dogs and cats at the local Animal Shelter and Humane Society. I LOVE , LOVE helping our community whenever I get the opportunity. During the Black Friday sale at Joann's Fabrics, no pill Fleece , normally $10.99 to 12.99 per yard, was on sale for under $3.00 a yard! SO I went a little crazy and bought 10 yards! (I had them cut each at 1 1/4" yards)  Now, I wish I had purchased more:.
I could just hem the edges and send the blankets on their way, but I decided I wanted to make them a little extra cute. For each blanket I used a 1 1/4 yards.
I have a few handy tips that makes this a fun and fast project!

First, choose your fleece and a coordinating thread! I ADORE using 12wt Aurifil with fleece. I chose a pretty variegated in color 4658. I also used a 100/16 needle.

Trim the selvages and cut about a 2" square off of each corner. This will eliminate some of the bulkiness when we hem the edges.

I chose a Blanket Stitch on my machine. Fold over the hem to about 2". (Same distance as the corner you cut out.) Now here's my tip: Instead of pinning the hem, I use a simple piece of cardboard the width of the hem as a guide. I just measure the turned up hem every so often with the cardboard. It helps me keep the hem even without having to measure or pin.

When you get to the corner, just fold over the hem and turn the corner. . You will have a raw edge on the 2" part that you cut out but don't worry about it now. I LOVE this Blanket Stitch using Aurifil 12wt! Look how pretty! Continue around all 4 sides.

Now you could just call it finished right here. Look how nice this edge looks!

But let's have a little more fun! Lay down the blanket and smooth down the hem. Then once again, cut out that corner. Be careful not to snip thru the seam.

Now, snip fringe all the way around the blanket approximately 1/2" wide intervals. I prefer to use my Karen Kay Buckley scissors. They have a serrated edge and grip the fleece so it doesn't slid away from the scissors. And they are very sharp and strong.

Or, and here is tip #2 - Use the top of your Shape Cutter ruler and Rotary cutter! And the slits are at 1/2" increments!  Woohoo!   Be sure the end of the cutting slit does not extend past your seam! Awesomesauce!

Be sure you have a fringe at the end and beginning of each side.

Continue around all four sides until you have Fringed the entire blanket.

Look how pretty. Now we could stop there and have a cute little blankie, but let's have some more fun and Braid those Fringed Loops!

I use a large Crochet hook, or you could just use your fingers. Start close to the end of one side an simply pull one loop through the next.

Continue up to the corner. The just grab the first fringe on the next side and keep going all the way around all four sides and back to where you started.

Then you will have one loop still on the hook.

I just remove the hook and fold (hide)  the last loop into the next loop and hand stitch it into place with a needle and thread.

And you are finished!

Well, almost finished. You have to put a puppy on it to test it out!

Yep - works just fine! Now make another one! This one is for a kitty!

2 down and 6 to go! Woohoo!

Now I know I should have bought more fleece! I can't wait to deliver them. I hope I don't come home with a puppy though!

So, I hope you enjoyed my little tutorial. I also hope you will consider donating a few blankets to your local Animal shelter.

This month the wonderful folks at Aurifil are gifting a beautiful set of 12wt  thread from the Splendor 1920's collection. This is so neat because I didn't realize this months prize was 12wt! I am so jealous of whoever wins this. My only spool of 12wt yellow variegated is getting mighty low!

Look at these yummy colors!

And that's not all, a second lucky participant will win a Gift Certificate form the fabulous folks at the Fat Quarter Shop!
 Woohoo!
 Shopping time!

And, my ETSY shop , Featherweight Quilt Company, is donating a Mini Charm Christmas Hexagon Gift Kit to a third participant!! Woohoo!

Farm Love Friday 11-20-15

Happy Friday dear friends! TGIF! We had almost 3 inches of rain here this week! The rain didn't stop these adorable little birds from gathering all my Black Eyed Susan seeds! My camera lens kept fogging up with the rain and fog! I hope the sun today and tomorrow will dry things up a bit here around the farm.
I did get time with all the rain to stay indoors and put together a new Patchwork of the Crosses block for the ETSY shop. I love aqua, pink and red!
A neighbor will be keeping her grandchildren during the Thanksgiving break and asked me to put together some little kits to teach them to sew. I made the little Hexagon Ornament/ Gift Tag sets above. It includes (42) 2 1/2" Christmas fabric squares and (42) 1" hexagon Card Stock templates, all in a cute collectible Christmas tin. Each kit will make 6 Ornaments/Gift tags. That should keep them busy for a few days! I made some extra for the shop also. You can choose Christmas prints or Moda Mini Charm kits. You can find them here! I think they would make great Guild gifts, teacher gifts and stocking stuffers too!
Our next Sew Simple Saturday will be December 5th with a great 12wt Thread set from Aurifil thread and a gift certificate from the Fat Quarter Shop! I can't wait to see what Sew Simple tip, technique or tutorial everyone has to share! Be sure to link up for your chance to win one the great prizes available!
Thank you for stopping by today! A huge WELCOME to my new friends and followers! Happy Sewing ya'll!

Sew Simple Saturday 11/7/15

Hi everyone and welcome to another "Sew Simple Saturday link Up Party"! I have a cute and simple project to share today!
Hexagons have become so popular in the sewing and quilting community ! They are everywhere! In quilts, bags, clothes, pillows, and table linens ( place mats, mug rugs and runners)! And it's not surprising because they are so fun and simple to make! There are Hexagon Flower swap groups and exchanges galore on face book!  One of the most recent is a Swap for 1" Hexie Flowers with your name or state written on the center hexie! How fun is that!
I love making hexagon flowers to use as Ornaments and Gift tags too! I decided it would be really fun to embroider the center Hexagon with Holiday Wishes and Gift Recipient Names using my machine instead of using a permanent pen!
I chose a neutral background fabric for the Hexagon Centers and used Aurifil 40 weight thread!  It worked like a charm!

These were so fun! The "Georgia" one is for a swap! So much better than my handwriting! And I don't have to worry about it washing out or fading.

Here are the supplies you will need to create a Gift Tag or Ornament:

A few scraps of fabric for your Hexie Flower petals.
A Neutral fabric for the centers. Use a larger piece since you will need to embroider it on your machine. You can use the Hexagon acrylic to center your embroidery and cut out your fabric hexagons.
7 Hexagon cardstock templates or use freezer paper. These are 3/4". The Georgia one is 1".
Glue pen for basting or you can thread baste.
Fine sewing needle.
Matching Aurifil thread. Pictured above are Color numbers 2870 (Green)and 2250 (Red)
Aurifloss or Ribbon for hanging.
Pen for tracing.
A piece of cardstock for the back of the hexie flower
And a piece of fabric or an old Christmas card for the backing.

I used the green and gold star fabric for my petals. Just cut the fabric using the acrylic template and glue or thread baste around the cardstock templates. Then sew your petals to the center hexagon and whipstitch the petals together. This is what the back looks like:

Lay your hexie flower on the large piece of Card Stock and trace around it.

Cut out on the traced line. Then lay your cardstock flower onto your backing fabric, trace around your cardstock flower.

Cut out the fabric adding a seam allowance. Glue baste the edges down.

Your finished back.

I created a little hanging thread using Aurifloss. You can remove the paper templates from the hexie flower or leave them in. I like to leave them in to make the flower sturdier.
Sandwich the front , hanging threads and backing together. You can whip stitch the edges together or simply use a glue gun!
Here is the completed Gift Tag. I will add a little red Bow below the name. I also want to make some with old Christmas cards for the back.

You can also make a Hexagon Wreath by omitting the center Hexagon as shown in the photo below. Then you can hang a little Bell or Ornament in the Center.

I was really happy to finally use some of those Embroidery Stitches on my machine! The Aurifil 40 wt thread worked great. I can't wait to make more Gift Tags and ornaments! I do have the Hexagon acrylics and cardstock templates available in my ETSY shop. In both 3/4" and 1" sizes.  The kit above is sold out however.

I hope you enjoyed my Sew Simple project!
Our fabulous sponsors have two great prizes for Linky participants this month!
Aurifil thread has generously donated a Four Large Spool set of these great Neutrals in 50 wt for one lucky participant! These colors are fantastic and blend beautifully!

And the Fat Quarter Shop is offering a Gift certificate to one lucky participant!
