Hey ya'll! I have a fun and really easy table runner tutorial that I would like to share. It is made using a Mini Charm Pack , a little yardage and some English Paper Pieced Hexagons! With Summer almost here, I wanted some fun and cheery colors so I am using a mini charm of "Horizon" by Kate Spain.
Here is what you will need:
(1) Mini Charm pack or (42) 2 1/2" Squares
(2) 6 1/2" x 18" Strips of Accent fabric
(1) 18 x 20 1/2" Center Background Fabric
110" of 2 1/2" Fabric Strip for binding ( I used the same fabric as my center background).
(42) 1" Hexagon paper Templates ( I have kits available in my ETSY shop)
Coordinating threads ( I recommend Aurifil 50 wt.)
Applique and/or straight pins
Hand Sewing Needle - ( I use Straw #11)
Fons and Porter Glue Pen for glue basting your hexie flowers ( Or you can baste them by hand)
(1) 22 x 36 fabric for backing (This will be trimmed down)
(1) 22 x 36 batting ( This will be trimmed down)
One thing I love about English Paper Piecing is it's portability. I carried my Mini Charm Squares and Hexagon papers all over the farm and worked on them whenever I had the opportunity:
I made Hexagon flowers while I watered the cows:
After I fed the calves:
Finally got my 6 hexie flowers finished. I glue baste so it goes fairly quickly! :)
A Mini Charm pack will make 6 hexagon flowers or 7 hexagon flowers if you use a different fabric for the flower centers :)! We need 6 for this project.
Now lay your completed flowers out in a circle in an eye pleasing layout and whip stitch them together where they meet: DO THIS WITH THE PAPER TEMPLATES STILL IN THE FLOWERS:)!
Using your 18 x 20 1/2" Center background fabric, fold it in half in both directions to find the center. Remove your papers from your flowers, press really well to insure that the seam allowance stays turned under the petals. Pin your flower circle into place for appliqueing onto the background. You may machine or hand applique it onto the background:
Next pin the Accent Fabric strips onto both ends and attach using a 1/4" seam:
Open and press seams toward the Accent Fabric:
Woohoo! Your top is finished! Now you can go watch a calf smell a Posie!:
When you get back , go ahead and layer your top with the batting and the backing fabric. Pin and quilt as desired:
This is the first time I have used a Hera Marker to mark a quilt. I really enjoyed it and I don't have to worry about ink on my fabrics. Since these prints are so busy, I kept my quilting really simple with straight lines in the center and through the accent fabrics and Daisy loops in the flower petals.
After you have finished quilting your Runner, trim and square it up. It should measure 18" x 32".
Prepare and attach your binding. I like to machine sew bindings to the front and hand sew them down on the back. I used Aurifil #2847 50 wt for the binding and the quilting.
And woohoo! You are finished!
Now you can go find some posies to set on your "Summer Posies" Runner!
